Hidden in Plain sight, Handgun Hideouts.

Many of us (hopefully) keep a handgun close by for protection. I personally believe having a firearm that you are proficient with close by is a good idea. It has been said if your defensive firearm is further than two feet away from you you might as well be unarmed. I tend to agree with that saying. Occasionally it is beneficial to be able to have that firearm close by but out of sight. There are options to fill that need such as the Hornady Rapid Safe, which fulfills that need as any other gun securing device, but it is not very inconspicuous.

If you want to hide a gun in plain site you have a pretty good and inexpensive option with Handgun Hideouts. I received one myself, a Websters Dictionary as a matter of fact, and have had it out about a month now. As expected, no one has given it a second look until I show it to them.  It can be placed inconspicuously in your living room, for instance, with something on top like a pair of reading glasses and no one is the wiser.

Now, this is not one of those wooden “looks kind of like a book” deals but the Handgun Hideout is actually made from a real book. There are many different types of books they are made from and many different configurations depending on what you need or want. If you don’t see exactly what you want it can also be custom made for firearms or anything else you may want to hide in plain sight.

I received the model cut for a large semi automatic pistol and it was able to easily accommodate a Glock 20 or the subcompact Glock 29. and a spare magazine.

A fullsize and compact Government Model also easily fit and enough room for three spare magazines

I also tried a snub nose revolver, such as this Ruger SP 101 and had enough room for a small flashlight and several speed strips. A couple of speed loaders would also fit nicely. There is a Handgun Hideout specifically for revolvers and such but I wanted to show that though it was for a semi auto pistol it could be used for other firearms as well.

You can see how well the book was cut out, with plenty of extra room.

The pages are glued together to keep the fumbling down but the corners are left free in case someone begins to thumb the corners so everything will seem normal.

The primary function of the Handgun Hideout is so you can keep a defensive firearm close by, readily accessible, but well hidden. It does not lock or have provisions to be secured as such would give away the secret so it would not be ideal for secure storage. With that said, as well as a handgun can be hidden it would certainly provide a better layer or protection than the handgun laying out or hidden under a couch cushion.  If the book is kept high on a shelf that would deter young hands from locating the contents, but always err on the side of caution when preventing unauthorized persons from accessing the firearm. I am really digging the design of this and after a month or so, it has proved to work as advertised.

By Hunter Elliott

I spent much of my youth involved with firearms and felt the call early on to the United States Marine Corps, following in my father's and his brother's footsteps. Just after high school I enlisted and felt most at home on the rifle range, where I qualified expert with several firearms and spent some time as a rifle coach to my fellow Marines. After being honorably discharged I continued teaching firearm safety, rifle and pistol marksmanship, and began teaching metallic cartridge reloading. In the late 1990s I became a life member to the National Rifle Association and worked with the Friends of the NRA. Around that time my father and I became involved with IDPA and competed together up until he passed away. I began reviewing firearms for publications in the mid 2000s and have been fortunate to make many friends in the industry. Continuing to improve my firearms skills and knowledge is a never ending journey in which we should all be committed. I am also credited as weapons master on a few independent films.

  1. An earth magnet on the cover underside and in the body of the pages would hold the book closed extremely well so even if they book shelf got tossed it wouldn’t come open. Should also be strong enough that a child couldn’t open it? Could be the feature that takes you to the next level. Happy New Year.

  2. Some sort of snap inside for positive closing. Something like that is really nice for a home without kids. Or in a different book that assures no one will bother opening it. Maybe an Al Franken book or anything by Al Gore.

  3. Yeah, you can get real elaborate doing something like this. Foam padding, etc…Makes a good place to stash some whiskey away from the nagging wife too.
