I have become very fond of the Barnes Precision Machine 7.5″ SBR in 5.56×45, which you can see reviewed by following this link.  I started carrying that SBR as I reviewed it and came to realize the advantage of carrying a small carbine as a defensive firearm, but also realized the need for a silencer on such a carbine. Enter the Liberty Suppressors Triumph. Don’t get me wrong we all legally carry our sidearm and that should serve us well, but in this day and age the world has shifted to a different dynamic. People are getting attacked, assaulted, dragged from their vehicles or home and getting the hell beaten out of them. These attacks are often unprovoked and very random. When it comes to self defense, you are not only responsible for yours but also the safety of your friends and family.

I am not trying to stand on a soapbox and be a doomsday prophet. Chances are you will go about your day to day without major issues but that is no excuse to not prepare for unpleasantness, which is what we all pray for. It was from my father when I first heard, hope for the best and prepare for the worst. The last thing in the world I would want to happen to anyone is to have to defend themselves and possibly injury the proverbial “bad guy”.  Stay with me please, I promise I am making a point.

A firearm is not some magic talisman that you keep in close proximity and all the bad folks are warded off. It is, in fact, one spoke in a wheel and is less important than some such as understanding and proficiency.  Now what does all that have to do with a silencer? I told you all that to tell you this. The AR-15 platform is an excellent self and home defense platform but can be a bit large for some applications so we have the the short barreled rifle, or SBR option. The traditional AR-15 with a sixteen inch barrel is loud enough that it cannot be safely fired without hearing protection, shorter barrels the report gets much more dramatic. If firearm is pressed into service post haste there is no time to search for hearing protection so we have to look at other options. The Triumph gives you suppression levels averaging 132 decibels, taming that AR report a great deal.

Finding a silencer rated for a seven and a half inch AR is tougher than with longer barrels. I chose the seven and a half inch SBR because even with a seven inch silencer, I am still running a shorter package than a standard AR-15. Now I know you are thinking with all that barrel loss, you will have a tremendous velocity loss and so loss in ammunition performance.  You would be right, but I have done a ballistic test comparing the sixteen inch vs eleven and a half inch and a seven and a half inch in the 5.56×45 and when choosing the right ammunition, such as the Hornady 55gr V-Max performance is still very acceptable. You can read see that ballistic test by following this link.   The Liberty Suppressors Triumph did not affect reliability nor accuracy through the cross section of ammunition ran through the BMP SBR in the initial review.

You will notice this silencer is Cerokoted flat dark earth, which is not standard. I worked with Sand Mountain Armory via Liberty Suppressors to have my silencer customized a bit before I took delivery.

The Triumph is a direct thread non user serviceable can, so while being good to go for 5.56×45 I would not recommend it for rimfire since rimfire can be a bit dirtier and the can cannot be disassembled for cleaning. The shorter the barrel on the host the more life cut out of the silencer, with that in mind I spoke to several folks in the silencer business and they estimated an all titanium silencer with an Inconel blast baffle should easily be good for 5000-6000 rounds before any noticeable suppression loss. If you ever do reach that point, Liberty Suppressors can take care of getting your can recored.

I spent much of my youth involved with firearms and felt the call early on to the United States Marine Corps, following in my father's and his brother's footsteps. Just after high school I enlisted and felt most at home on the rifle range, where I qualified expert with several firearms and spent some time as a rifle coach to my fellow Marines. After being honorably discharged I continued teaching firearm safety, rifle and pistol marksmanship, and began teaching metallic cartridge reloading. In the late 1990s I became a life member to the National Rifle Association and worked with the Friends of the NRA. Around that time my father and I became involved with IDPA and competed together up until he passed away. I began reviewing firearms for publications in the mid 2000s and have been fortunate to make many friends in the industry. Continuing to improve my firearms skills and knowledge is a never ending journey in which we should all be committed. I am also credited as weapons master on a few independent films.
