I am the world’s worst at properly carrying a spare magazine. I usually drop it into my front pocket, and off I go, and as well all know, there is a myriad of reasons why that is not good, from getting lint and debris into the magazine to having it shift out of place and even ammunition popping out of the magazine. Still, I knew better and did nothing about it.

A few months ago, I got the Extra Carry concealed carry magazine pouch for review. It was so simple I was disappointed in myself for not thinking of it. With the single clip, the Extra Carry is held securely in your pocket yet looks like a multi-tool or small pocket knife, so it does not scream GUN, which is good. I have been using it for the past few months, and it has worked exactly as it should. Of course, Extra Carry has many different configurations for whichever pistol you carry.

It is a great idea to carry a spare magazine, and it is paramount to keep that magazine clean and secure. I will endeavor to break my bad habits of carrying a spare magazine poorly, and this may be the trick I needed. At $55 it is somewhat an expensive option.

I spent much of my youth involved with firearms and felt the call early on to the United States Marine Corps, following in my father's and his brother's footsteps. Just after high school I enlisted and felt most at home on the rifle range, where I qualified expert with several firearms and spent some time as a rifle coach to my fellow Marines. After being honorably discharged I continued teaching firearm safety, rifle and pistol marksmanship, and began teaching metallic cartridge reloading. In the late 1990s I became a life member to the National Rifle Association and worked with the Friends of the NRA. Around that time my father and I became involved with IDPA and competed together up until he passed away. I began reviewing firearms for publications in the mid 2000s and have been fortunate to make many friends in the industry. Continuing to improve my firearms skills and knowledge is a never ending journey in which we should all be committed. I am also credited as weapons master on a few independent films.

  1. Hunter,
Thanks for taking the time to review the ExtraCarry Mag pouches. Great Review!
The ExtraCarry Mag pouches are actually made from carbon fiber reinforced nylon. So, they are pretty indestructible.

The clip is actually part of a patented locking mechanism. There are teeth under the clip that hold the mag pouch tightly to the seam of your pocket. Here is a link to a video showing how the locking mechanism works. https://vimeo.com/218513875
